JOB SUMMARY: Hopi Jr./Sr. High School seeks Assistant Coaches who are committed to educating students from diverse backgrounds, challenging each individual to strive for high standards of success, instill core cultural attributes into each student, and supporting the Head Coach in the development of the overall program. As a Hopi Jr./Sr. High School employee you are called upon to be a role model. Your main goal/responsibility is to create an atmosphere of development focused on each student’s intellectual, cultural, and physical capacities.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

An Assistant Coach is responsible for coaching, character development, and providing direction to student-athletes, so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Hopi Jr./Sr. High School believes that an Assistant Coach must assume the vital role of fostering cooperation and positive teamwork, exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship, assisting in building fan involvement at games and special events, and developing our youth into future leaders. The job requires thoughtful and respectful interaction with all students, fellow coaches, staff, parents, and community members. Positive communication strategies, organizational skills, and safety awareness are also key requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Follows and upholds the policies, mission, and vision of Hopi Jr./Sr. High School.
  2. Knowledgeable of all North Region, 2A Conference, and Arizona Interscholastic Association procedures and bylaws.
  3. Assists in the planning, organizing, and directing of the specific Hopi Jr./Sr. High School Athletic Program.
  4. Adheres to the financial policies of Hopi Jr./Sr. High School in regards to purchase orders, collection and disbursement of money, expenses and receipts.
  5. Instructs and demonstrates skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development.
  6. Ensures that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
  7. When participation numbers require, assists the Head Coach in plans, organizes, advertises, and conducts tryouts; informs Athletic Department and participants of final selections. Maintains integrity throughout the selection process.
  8. Assists in the maintenance of a running inventory of all equipment, uniforms, and supplies within the order. Submits a complete inventory to the Athletic Department at the conclusion of the season. Responsible for ensuring all items of equipment, uniforms, and supplies meet industry standards for safety and cleanliness.
  9. Assists in arranging and scheduling bus transportation with the Athletic Director. Will travel with the student-athletes on the team bus/vehicle both to and from competitions.
  10. Submits athletic rosters to the Athletic Department one week before the first game. Provides an updated roster weekly throughout the course of the season. Submits an end of the season report to the Athletic Department that includes; overall record, conference record, team awards/championships, roster of athletes that completed season, final season statistics, and alphabetical list of award winners.
  11. Ensures that proper forms (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current and that all student athletes are academically eligible.
  12. Checks and secures all offices, storage rooms, outside doors, locker rooms, and lights after last player leaves after both games and practices.
  13. Assists the Head Coach with any off-season training programs including scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, open gyms/fields, off-season weight lifting, etc.
  14. Assists with informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season for all levels.
  15. Creates a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  16. Maintains Strong Interpersonal Skills: Works well with other from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict, maintaining confidentiality, listening to others, keeping emotions under control, remaining open to others’ ideas, and contributing to building a positive team spirit.
  17. Works directly with school athletic trainer in reporting injuries, teaching precautions and procedures to ensure staff/student safety, and help students prevent injuries. Completes Hopi Jr./Sr. high School Accident/Incident Report for any student injured within 24 hours even if student athlete does not see physician.
  18. Models good sportsmanship, behavior, and maintains appropriate conduct towards opposing team, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and community.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. Knowledge of technical aspects of the assigned sport and willingness to continue to learn and examine new ideas pertinent to the assigned sport.
  2. Skilled in communicating both orally and in writing
  3. Knowledge of Arizona Interscholastic Association policies and procedures
  4. Role model that coincides with Hopi Jr./Sr. High School’s mission and vision statements.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A valid Arizona Drivers License.
  2. A valid Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card
  3. A current CPR/First Aide Certification (This can be completed within 45 days of hire)
  4. Arizona Interscholastic Association and National Federation of High Schools Coaching Certifications. (This can be completed within 45 days of hire)
