POSITION: Bus Driver

DEPARTMENT: Facilities & Operation

CONTRACT TERM:   Ten Months (10)

REPORTS TO:  Lead Bus Driver

CATAGORY:  Classified

CLASSIFICATION:  Non-Exempt

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Bus Driver will operate a bus or school vehicle transporting students on daily routes and to special destinations for student instruction and will perform other school duties when not directly involved in student transportation. Hopi Junior/Senior High School is committed to helping all students develop skills in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning and career and vocational development.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: 

Demonstrated skills in dealing with people in difficult circumstances with considerable tact.

Professional verbal and written communication skills in English; ability to instruct and maintain emotional control under stress.

Skilled in operating a school bus.

Knowledge of rules and established procedures in operation of a school bus.

Ability to read directions and write regular reports.

Punctual and reliable with excellent time management skills.

Knowledge of general school site rules and policy.

Knowledge of Governing Board rules of conduct and policy.

Skill in communicating orally and in writing.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, requiring the ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, faculty, staff and the public.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Must possess a Valid Arizona CDL Driver’s License, class A, B, or C with passenger Endorsement and a Valid Arizona School Bus Driver Certification.  Must be able to pass a physical examination ensuring applicant ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs., sit for long periods of time, bend, stoop, and other physical requirements of this position role; this includes day and evening operation of school student transportation vehicles. Must also pass a required drug test.

 

Minimum of GED or high school education completion required.

 

Demonstrated competency in safe passenger vehicle (bus; van; other) operation in all types of weather conditions, preventive bus and van vehicle maintenance, monitoring and enforcement of student bus conduct, record keeping, radio communication, and other applicable skills required.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.

Valid State Driver Licenses.

Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years, which include state, federal and local tribe.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRE 

 

Maintain excellent driving record.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: School year contract (10-months).  Hourly rate and work year established by the Governing Board per classified hourly rate schedule. 

 

INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY: Hopi/Indian preference in employment will be practiced, in accordance to the Hopi Tribe, “any person who is presently an enrolled member of the Hopi Tribe.”  Shall mean that in selection process Indian candidates who meet or surpass qualifications for a position shall be given preference for positions established by the Governing Board.
